M. DANIEL ROUKEMA

CEO

M. Daniel Roukema is an award-winning strategic communications and organizational development strategist who has spent his career working with non-profit organizations, governments, and regulatory bodies.  He is also a recognized facilitator, speaker, and instructor who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community and social impact throughout Canada and internationally for thirty years.

Daniel spent almost two decades working in communications and government relations and led significant stakeholder engagement processes that impacted public policy in environment, economic development, immigration, and public health.

He has overseen several regulatory communications departments leading start-up and transformational change processes at provincial and national levels.  Daniel is the principal architect behind the development of the Canadian Regulatory Guide, RegulatoryJobs.ca, and The Registrar magazine, and is currently developing a proprietary regulatory communications startup and operations toolkit.  In 2016, Daniel received the Consumer Protection Award from the Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR).

Actively involved in community leadership, Daniel is a current member of the Board of Directors of the United Way Halton & Hamilton and the Board of Governors of King’s-Edgehill School in Nova Scotia.  His governance experience also includes former positions on the Boards of Community Development Halton in Burlington and HMC Connections in Oakville. Before that, he served on the Boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa, the Social Planning Council of Ottawa, and Child Find Nova Scotia in Halifax, where he presided over the creation and launch of the province’s Amber Alert program.

Daniel has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Dalhousie University and pursued an M.S. in Community Economic Development at Southern New Hampshire University.  He received a post-graduate certificate in European Union External Relations from l’Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium and an executive certificate in Digital Business Strategy from MIT. Daniel is expected to receive an MBA from the University of Cumbria in 2022.

MITCHELL SCRIMGEOUR-BROWN

Senior Associate

Mitchell Scrimgeour-Brown is a writer, editor, and regulatory communications professional who was an integral member of the communications team at the College of Nurses of Ontario for almost a decade.

Mitchell is currently managing editor of The Registrar magazine, Canada’s consumer protection publication.  He is also the editor of Beyond, the quarterly magazine of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, and was previously the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Retailer, the Retail Council of Canada’s bi-monthly trade magazine.

Mitchell has written for the Chronicle Herald in Nova Scotia, Metroland Media Group, Rogers News agency and AOL Canada. He is a former adjunct professor in the school of journalism at the University of King’s College.

DAMIAN ALI

Associate and Digital Analytics Specialist

Damian Ali has an extensive background in multimedia journalism and digital marketing.

A journalist for The Registrar magazine, Canada’s consumer protection publication, Damian also writes for Beyond, the quarterly magazine of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.  A rising star in regulatory journalism, Damian has written about ground-breaking political and social issues affecting licensing and professional regulation in Canada.

As a reporter, he covers news locally and nationally for several publications and has also collaborated on multiple long-form projects with several notable news outlets.

Damian obtained his Honours B.A. at York University and Journalism education at Humber College in Toronto.

When not working, Damian spends his time furthering his knowledge of web development and design. He is also a huge fan and practitioner of martial arts, dedicating the last decade to training in boxing, Muay Thai, and kickboxing.

MARIJA HAJSTER

 Graphic Designer

Marija Hajster is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning Master Graphic Designer who has worked with a number of publishing houses on magazines, books, and educational tools.

Marija is the Production Manager and Graphic Designer of The Registrar magazine, the Brussels Times, and European Business, and has worked with Cambridge University, the Global Thinkers Forum, and Canada’s Home and Land Magazine.

Marija attended the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade, Serbia. 

MYCHAYLO PRYSTUPA

Video Production Lead

Mychaylo Prystupa has been creating authentic and well-crafted video stories for more than 15 years. He is an award-winning broadcast journalist and a recognized expert in strategic video communications, media relations, the art of storytelling, and marketing.

Mychaylo has produced video projects in Canada, China, Philippines, Uganda, United Kingdom, France, and the United States. A TV reporter for nearly a decade, he worked with CBC, CTV, the Globe and Mail, Maclean’s, Danish TV (DR), Japanese TV (NHK), Cascadia magazine and The Tyee. In 2017, he co-won a Jack Webster journalism award for an interactive online report about oil tanker safety for the Globe and Mail.

He is an instructor at InFocus Film School in Vancouver and has recently produced videos for the University of British Columbia, several start-up businesses, a national museum, and a winery.

JAMIE BRUCE

Research Assistant

Jamie Bruce is graduating this spring with a BA in Political Science from the University of Ottawa.

Deeply committed to social justice and political issues, Jamie has supported MDR Public Affairs and its consumer protection focus since its inception four years ago by providing critical information and data that contributed to the development of the Canadian Regulatory Guide and RegulatoryJobs.ca.

Fluent in English, French, and Spanish, Jamie needs COVID-19 to end so she can travel.  In the meantime, she will begin graduate studies on a full scholarship in September in International Relations and Sustainability.

MAESTRO

Senior Advisor to the CEO

For almost seven years, Maestro has spent his time eating, sleeping, and playing.  He’s never had a real job, has no formal education, and his aspirations are limited to hanging out in Amazon boxes. He’s also never read The Registrar magazine.

His lifestyle is the envy of the MDR Public Affairs team.
