M. DANIEL ROUKEMA

M. Daniel Roukema is an award-winning business and community leader who has worked with charities, the private sector, governments, and regulatory bodies for almost 25 years. Specializing in non-profit organizational development and strategic communications, he has been leading transformational change as an employee, consultant, and Board member. He is also a recognized facilitator, speaker, and instructor.
Daniel is the former Director of Communications at the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council, the Condominium Authority of Ontario, and the Condominium Management Regulatory Authority of Ontario. He was also the manager of communications and government relations at that National Student Loans Services Centre, and spent a number of years prior to that working with governments and not-for-profit organizations leading significant stakeholder engagement processes that impacted public policy in the areas of the environment, economic development, immigration, and public health.
A current member of the Board of Directors of the United Way Halton & Hamilton, his governance experience includes former positions on the Boards of Community Development Halton in Burlington and HMC Connections in Oakville. Prior to that he served on the Boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa, the Social Planning Council of Ottawa, and Child Find Nova Scotia where he presided over the implementation of the province's Amber Alert program.
As a Board member from 2002-2004 of Stepping Stone Association in Halifax, an organization that advocates for the safety of sex trade workers, he testified before a House of Commons subcommittee proposing to entrench vulnerabilities of hate due to one's work and/or occupation as an identifiable group in Canada's Hate Crimes legislation. A survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Daniel has remained passionate about human rights, social justice, and community economic empowerment, which highly influenced the establishment of MDR Public Affairs.
Daniel has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Dalhousie University, a post-graduate certificate in European Union External Relations from l'Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, and pursued an M.S. in Community Economic Development at Southern New Hampshire University. He recently received an executive certificate in Digital Business Strategy from MIT and will obtain an MBA from the University of Cumbria and Robert Kennedy College in 2021.
